Favorites: Nude Lipsticks

People can be intimidated by lipstick, even I was at one point. An easy way to transition into being comfortable wearing lipstick is by wearing a nude shade. Nude shades look best if they are either 1 to 2 shades lighter or darker then your natural lip color. They can either lean more pink or more brown, but that choice is purely up to you and what you feel comfortable with.

No one wants to look like they have concealer / foundation covered lips. It is best to stick with shades that look like they would be a natural lip color. Natural lipstick is great to balance out a smokey eye, wear with a neutral look or even wear on a no make-up make-up day.

Here are a few of my go to nude lipsticks (and one gloss).

1. Milani Nude Cream - This satin finish nude is my current favorite of this set. It is moisturizing and opaque. The shade almost matches my natural lip color, just the right amount of pink and brown. Definitely a great drugstore shade.

2. MAC Cream Cup - With a creamsheen finish, this pale cool pink shade is probably my first and all time favorite natural lip shade. I have loved this shade so much that I have bought it twice. The finish is nice and glossy. I like to pair it with a smokey eye, but it also looks great with minimal make-up.

3. Wet and Wild Just Peachy (903C) - This nude is more on the peachy side (hence the name), it has a satin matte finish which helps it last a long time on your lips. Due it it being matte it isn't the most moisturizing of lipsticks, but a layer of lip balm prior to application helps. This peachy shade is great in the summer, but I will also wear it in the fall with a bronze smokey eye.

4. L'oreal Fairest Nude - This is my most brown nude, don't let the word brown scare you off, it can pull almost mauve when worn. It is a very natural shade, the most similar to a natural lip color, kind of like a my lips by better shade.

5. NYX Fig - For some people this might be a debatable nude, but I love to push some buttons. Yes, Fig is a light-medium cool pink shade, but it still in my mind is a very natural pink color but amped up. The NYX round lipsticks are terrific, and this one is no exception, it is pigmented and moisturizing. This is my go to evening nude, it can be toned down by layering a paler shade over top.

6. NYX Butter Gloss in Creme Brûlée - Even though this is about my favorite nude lipsticks, I couldn't help but throw in a nude gloss that I have been wearing almost everyday since I got it. Creme Brûlée is almost like the gloss version of MAC Cream Cup and the gel formula is soft and not sticky. I added this because it is my favorite gloss to layer over all these lipsticks if I want a shinier look. The pale shade is neutral enough that it doesn't alter the shade underneath too much. If you haven't tried the butter glosses then you definitely need to try them soon (like now soon).

I hope this inspires you to try some nude lipsticks if you are afraid, they are a staple in my makeup bag. They are great to throw on if you just want a little color, they compliment almost every makeup look. If you don't want to spend a ton of money, check out the drugstore (brands like Wet and Wild sell lipsticks for as low as $0.99), buy a variety of shades and find the one that you like the best on you.

If you love a good nude lipstick, then what are your favorites?

Birchbox: October 2013

Another month, another Birchbox, and they keep just getting better. If you have been living under a rock, then here is the schpeal (no I am not sponsered by Birchbox, I am a loving subscriber who has been with them pretty much since the beginning) Birchbox is one of the original monthly subscription sample boxes. You pay $10 per month and they send you a box of samples (about 4-5) catered to your specific needs.

This month it was a bit skincare heavy, ok 2 out of the 5 were skincare based, which is perfect timing because I have been concentrating on my skin the last few weeks attempting to find a good working skincare routine. They also included a curl cream (which is one of those products I fail to buy but know I need to) and 2 lip products.

1. Evologie Stay Clear Cream - The timing couldn't be better because I have skin that has been breaking out for years, I am finally trying to get it under control, but I would like to use less harsh products over time. This is said to protect skin and balance oil levels (perfect for my oily-combonation skin that produces oil at the drop of a hat).

2. Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls - Leaves your hair frizz free and feather light, curls perfectly managed. Let's see if all of this is true. I just put this in my hair after my shower, I am currently sitting here with wet hair and this product in it, hopefully my waves will look nice and soft.

3. Pop Beauty Aqua Lacquer - A lipgloss that is said to be hydrating and plumping. I am not typically a fan of plumping lipgloss, but with a cool minty feeling it isn't as painful as other plumping lip glosses. I didn't notice this specifically plumping, but then again I naturally full lips. The gloss has a nice color and provides a nice shine, it is definitely a tad on the sticky side, but not as sticky as some and not a soft as my beloved NYX Butter Gloss. The applicator is interesting, it is like a flat piece of flexible plastic (see below),  its not my favorite but I am not used to it yet.

Transient

4. Serious Skincare Glycolic Extreme Renewal Exfoliating Facial - I am a sucker for face masks, and after using this one it definitely has things that my drugstore and lush masks don't have. This mask has left my skin feeling soft and refreshed. This minty cool mask helps at drying out acne, while washing off you get the added bonus of a mild exfoliation, which I love. You can definitely get 3 uses out of this sample, I am looking forward to trying this again.

5. Chapstick Hydration Lock - Said to give 8 hour moisture, mine came in a nice vanilla flavor. I like this, basic and moisturizing Chapstick, to say it gave 8 hour moisture is quite the claim. It definitely is moisturizing, but I doubt that I won't have to or want to reapply before the day is over.

Packing List: Make-up

Continuing my little mini series on packing and travel (check out my previous post on my carry on essentials), I bring to you... What I plan on packing in my makeup bag! I have already showed you what I like to pack when I am going on a little weekend trip (see here), but when packing for a longer trip I pack my makeup bag differently. I like going for multi-use products, long wearing products, palettes and pieces I can get a variety of looks out of, since you never know what each day will hold.

PackingListMakeup.jpg

When travelling I like to bring a full coverage, long wearing foundation such as my favorite CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3 in 1 Foundation (wow that is a mouthful). The reason I go for a long wearing, high coverage foundation, is because I am normally out of the hotel all day and I want to look good for as long as possible, but also because I can thin it out with moisturizer if I want a lighter coverage.

Running about and trying to take in as much of your destination as possible, can take a toll on you. Plus with the lack of sleep and jet lag, the dark circles under my eyes come out in a blaze of glory. Bringing a corrector, like Bobbi Brown's Creamy Corrector (serious holy grail product here) will help mask the darkness. For added coverage I will apply NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, which is moisturizing enough to use under your eyes and full coverage enough to cover any spots or discoloration.

Because my skin is oily, I always have to set my foundation. When wearing a full coverage foundation, I like to wear a light setting powder such as ELF's Tone Correcting Powder. It has a translucent coverage, but the mix of colors in the powder help correct the imperfections in your face. You get the correction without the heaviness of a powder foundation. Plus it's only $3, you can't beat that.

Palettes are great for travel. I have a great NARS blush palette that I got over the holidays last year. It is my absolute favorite thing to bring while travelling, it has 4 blushes, plus a bronzer and a highlighter. The NARS Guy Bourdin One Night Stand Palette (NARS has the naughtiest names, I love it) is very similar to the one I got last year. It covers every possible look, you can contour with a bronzer, or just us it to warm up your skin. There are also a variety of blushes, both matte and shimmery, plus shade that are light, bright, or dark. Investing in a blush palette is great if you travel a lot (or just ask for it for the holidays).

Another palette that is great for travel is Urban Decay's Naked Palette (Naked 2 is great too) . The original Naked palette is my favorite for travel, because I can use the shade Naked to fill in my eyebrows (Naked 2 is much cooler). Either palette is great because it comes with great matte shades that are great crease colors, as well as a variety of shimmery eye shadows, which can help you accomplish any look under the sun., plus you can use the black shades to line your lash line, if you don't feel like bringing an eyeliner.

To help make the eye shadows long lasting, it is great to bring a primer. A neutral cream eye shadow, such as Maybelline's Color Tattoo in Barely Branded, is great because it works well as a primer, but also as a quick wash of color if you want a simple look.

Finally for eyes, I like to bring both a liquid and a pencil eyeliner for variety. Liquid eye liners are quite long wearing, but I struggle to find a great long wearing pencil. Urban Decay makes a good long wearing pencil with their 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil. It's easily blendable when first applied, if you want a smokey eye, but once it sets you are set for a while.   Of course mascara is a must, I promise I won't harp on about how much I love CoverGirl Clump Crusher, so that's it about mascara.

Lastly comes lips. A nude and a bright or dark lipstick are my go to's for travelling, also a neutral gloss is great for using everyday. Lately my go to nude has been Milani's Color Statement Lipstick in Nude Creme, I love to layer it with NYX Butter Gloss in Creme Brulee. The glosses are amazing, I definitely need to get more of them, the gel formula is high shine without the stickiness, it is also very long lasting. For a dark lip I have been obsessing over Milani's Color Statement Lipstick in Sangria, which is said to be a dupe for MAC Rebel.

When packing makeup for travelling, it is best to bring products that you can get a variety of looks out of. An eye shadow palette and blush palette are a must for me, all the other products are interchangeable. For me, I prefer long wearing products when travelling, because I know I will be spending a good amount of the day away from the hotel without the possibility of massive touch-ups. I try to pack as minimally as possible, but I am still the girl who likes to do full makeup most days and I like having those options while I am away from home.

Since palettes are my travel go to, then what are some of your favorite palettes that you would bring with you on vacation?

Favorites: Fall Blushes

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year, I love the first crisp cool day of the year, I love the changing of the leaves and I love the chunky sweaters. As the seasons change I like to change up more then just my clothes. My makeup gets darker and my blushes go more neutral.

I want to share with you some of my favorite go to fall blushes. They are my most grabbed cheek colors throughout the fall and winter, until I switch back to brights in the spring.

Transient

These colors are definitely very similar (at least they look so in the picture) but they all give a far different effect on the cheeks. The colors also all look very blah in the pan but they look amazing on, especially NARS Sin

CoverGirl Soft Mink is a blush I have purchased twice. It is a shimmery muted rose color, it is like a highlight and blush in one. Don't be afraid of the shimmer, it more so gives you an inner glow then causes you to shine like a disco ball. This is definitely an old favorite of mine. The swatch below definitely doesn't do it justice with the  pearl finish it has.

Sleek is one of those brands you don't hear about in the US that often. It is a popular high street (drugstore) brand in the UK, who make some of the most amazing blushes I have ever tried, they are highly pigmented and the color selection is amazing. At only $5.99 they are well worth it, plus they ship to the US.

Enough gushing on all their other blushes, lets get down to business. Suede is a beautiful apricot nude matte blush. It just looks amazing on. I feel like it gives my skin a very subtle warm natural flush. It is one of my favorite go to's when doing a shimmery smokey eye.

Transient

Tarte Exposed is another great everyday matte shades. It's pinker then the Sleek Suede, its like a dusty rose. The formulation feels very dry to the touch, but when applied with a brush (which is all that really matters) it goes on very nicely and blends very well. The amazonian clay helps make this a long wearing blush, probably one of the most long wearing blushes I own, without having to layer cream and powder. I definitely want to get another, I have been using this blush for a long time (at least a year or two) and the imprint is still pretty visible. It's insane how long this lasts.

Lastly probably the most unimpressive blush in the pan, but the most impressive on the cheeks is NARS Sin. I love this blush so much, it is a deep berry with a slighly gold sheen. I don't notice the sheen on my skin as much as you can see it when it is heavily swatched, but the color is just beautiful. It is hard to describe. Sin was one of those colors that gets easily over looked by all the other popular NARS blushes, but it is easily the best one that they make. Next time you are by a NARS counter take a closer look at it, I promise it does not disappoint.

What is your favorite fall blush?

Everyday Fall Makeup

I tend to get in a routine with my makeup, same palettes, same blush, etc. Every now and again I switch it up. This past month I have been grabbing for the same shadow, blush and lip combo a lot. The look is easy and perfect for fall. It is great for the mornings that I want to look put together but no have to take a lot of effort.

FallMakeupImage.jpg

I love a good eyeshadow that functions great as an all over lid shade but can be buffed out around the edges to create the illusion that you are wearing multiple eyeshadow shades. I recently fell back into love with MAC's Woodwinked eyeshadow. It is one of those mysterious colors that looks more brown in the pan, more gold on the eye and can be buffed out to create a reddish brown crease color around the eye. It really is the easiest eyeshadow to wear when you are in a rush.

The other way to get more use out of an eye shadow is to use a cream eyeshadow as a base, not only does it change the look of your eyeshadow, it can also help make it last longer. Using a light or white can make your eyeshadow look bright and true to color while using a dark cream shadow can give your shadow a smokier look. Lately I have been grabbing a dark shadow to use as a base, such as Makeup Forever Aquacream #15.

I finish off the eyes with a quick swipe of a black eyeliner pen and a couple layers of mascara. I personally love to layer my mascaras to get the look I like. Lately I have been layering my favorite CoverGirl Clump Crusher under the volumizing Maybelline The Rocket Mascara.

Transient

Because I have been going for a warm toned eyeshadow, I like to warm up my complexion with a bronzer, such as NARS Laguna , applied in the E3 shape. I finish off my cheeks with my favorite fall blush NARS Sin. It looks like nothing special in the pan, but when applied to your cheeks it gives you this great natural berry flush. I don't find that the gold shimmer in the berry blush really shows up on the face, which is good because I don't always want to look like a disco ball.

Finally I have been loving the pinky nude natural shade of the Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquer in Celestial. This liquid lipstick 100% lives up to the hype that surrounds it. The lip lacquers are soft, moisturizing, have great pigmentation and are long lasting. I definitely need to get my hands on more of them.

I have been loving my everyday fall look. It is simple and quick for me to put on in the morning. I would love to find more eyeshadows that are great to wear on their own, creating a multidimensional look when blended out. What has been your go to makeup look for the fall?
